D10 Dice
The d10 is a pentagonal trapezohedron made up of 10 faces that resemble kites, numbered 1 to 10, or 0 to 9. There are 5 kites on each “side” of the d10 die, with evens grouped on one side and odds on the other. Each kite points inward, so if the die was balanced on the convergence of all those points, the view you’re left with would resemble a two-dimensional circle.
The numbers are arranged so that the largest number (10) is on the opposite side of the smallest number (1), the 2nd largest number (9) is on the opposite side of the 2nd smallest number (2), and so on. The sum of the opposite sides is always 11. The same is true of d10 dice that are numbered from 0 to 9, with the exception that the sum of the sides always adds to 9 instead of 11.
Similar to the d12 die, d10 dice are used most often in combat scenarios to determine attack damage or ability effects. Additionally, some classes use the d10 as their “hitpoint die”. Most often, when rolled for damage or hitpoints, the ‘0’ stands for ‘10’.
The regular d10 can be rolled alongside a tens d10 (or a d10 percentile) to generate a random number between 1 and 100. In some cases, your DM may ask you to roll a d100 to determine a random outcome. While a die that large does exist, rolling these two instead is a quick and easy alternative.
